Raga is the pivotal concept and soul of Indian Music.  Raga-s are derived from various aesthetic combinations of svaras, in a particular sequence of ascent and descent, which establish their svarupa or form. Thus, different combinations of svaras make different ragas, of which, each has a unique identity. Contemporary Carnatic music is based on a system of 72 melakarta raga-s, the 'creator' raga-s, also called janaka raga-s or parent raga-s and Janya Raga-s (innumerable) are those that are derived from these melakarta raga-s. These are classified based on certain principles, under a common group.  While Melakarta raga-s have a formal structure and follow a fairly rigid scheme of scientific organization, janya raga-s are rooted in usage and are liable to evolve with the music.
